Reburned Lime Analyzer

Viscometer measures viscosity of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) polymer, which is used as food or cosmetic thickeners.

Testing Dissolving pulp is a highly specialized area of pulp manufacture and end use.  Econotech holds the unique position of being the world’s only independent organization with a fully equipped laboratory for evaluation of dissolving pulp for viscose, acetate, CMC and nitrocellulose applications.  Econotech was originally the R&D center for Columbia Cellulose, a manufacturer of dissolving pulp, but has been a completely independent lab since 1972.

The scope of our work covers:
  • raw material evaluation
  • pulping process simulation (sulfite and prehydrolysis kraft)
  • bleaching simulations, including chlorine free
  • small-scale end-use product testing of viscose, acetate, ethers and nitrocellulose
  • mill process design
  • environmental impact and pollution control
  • analytical testing
  • yarn defects analysis

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

  • sulfite and prehydrolysis kraft pulping to target alpha and viscosity
  • selection of pulping conditions for evaluation of new raw materials
  • bleaching and purification of lab and mill dissolving grade pulps
  • bleaching studies for reducing and eliminating chlorine usage
  • preparation of 5 to 10 kg of pulp for customer samples from new pulping and bleaching processes
ANALYTICAL TESTING
  • alpha, beta, gamma cellulose, S18, S10, S21.5, S7.14
  • carboxyl (meq/100 g), glucan, mannan, xylan, pentosan
  • ether solubles
  • 1% CED viscosity (cp), intrinsic viscosity (dL/g)
  • heavy metals, silica, ash content
END-USE TESTING
  • Viscose
    • slurry or sheet steep evaluation of: aging time, filterability, haze, clarity, ball fall viscosity of ripened viscose, particle count, salt index, 70% vacuum recovery
    • sheet properties, i.e. optimum filling rate, capillary rise, caustic absorption, swelling volume, sheet flotation
  • Cellulose acetate
    • acid dope (triacetate): color, haze
    • secondary acetate: plugging value, clogging constant, color, haze
  • Nitrocellulose
    • yield, % N, viscosity, haze, clarity, color, stability, bulk density
  • Acetate and viscose yarns
    • visual, microscopic, SEM and analytical evaluation of defects
  • Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)
    • grinding, steeping and etherification
    • testing for viscosity, haze, clarity, color and degree of substitution.
